Red Heeler Aquaponic Sales ... cont ...

Stage 1 of Red Heeler was completed in Januray 2008. We were very lucky that when we arrived it was the first day since Christmas that it had been below 41 degrees C. Even more fortunately it did not go above the mid-30's for the whole time we were doing the installation.

So here are some of the highlights from our trip. Here is the general layout. We have a Fish Shed and Grow Tunnels.

We started by putting the Grow Channels into the Grow Tunnels. Each Grow Channel is supported on the Bessa Block and Sleepers that we put in and levelled in the first stage.

Margaret is already for stage 2 with the wonderful new Grow Tunnel. She had the ground laser levelled and it is wonderful!

We then turned our attention to the Fish Shed. We had already marked out the shed floor ready for the equipment. We then placed the first pieces in place. We first put in two of the fish tanks, the swirl filter and the nitrification filter.

We then commenced to pipe in the system.

The swirl filter gets it water from the fish tanks. After it removes the larger solids the water then goes to the nitrification filter and then into the sump.

Our fish tanks are specially designed with two outlets and two air inlets. The round disks at each end are the air inlets. We use a parabolic shape for our tanks to ensure good water flow with water outlets being placed in the center where the water is stillest.

Finally there was enough in place for Margaret to test to put the first water into the system. We then were able to test that nothing leaked!

Now that we had done as much as we could in the Fish Shed we moved onto the Grow Tunnel. Please go to Red Heeler 3 for the next part of our installation.

Why did Red Heeler choose to put in an Aquaponic System?

Initially the motivation was the drought. Water allocations in the area were less than 20% making ground cropping almost impossible.
